Supporting the Environment
Supporting the environment is Rotary's seventh and newest area of focus, which are categories of service activities supported by global grants. (It joins peace building and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.) Ashland Rotary's Committee kicked off this new environmentally focused committee in 2022 by creating and funding, with the Ashland Food Co-op, the free compost bin drop off at the Tuesday farmer's market (located on the grounds of Science Works Museum).
Firewise program
The Environment and Sustainability Committee is coordinating a Rotary Volunteer effort with the City Firewise program to assist homeowners who are physically unable to bring their homes up to Firewise standards.
Other projects now under development may include working with other area environmental organizations on land conservation work projects, and visits to protected lands. Join us and bring your ideas about how to shape this exciting new committee.
A message from Flavia Franco:
The Community Compost food scrap drop off site has had great success since 2022 thanks in large part to the great start provided by the Ashland Rotary Club. The activity is now managed by Ashland Climate Collaborative and funded by Ashland Food Co-op. The service is so popular, it has resulted in one commercial account being added, and four new neighborhood year round drop sites funded by subscribers. And still at the Tuesday Ashland Growers Market, we are maxing out at nine bins, which is over 630 pounds of food scraps collected in one location in one day! We hope to form strategic alliances for our next expansion. You can stay tuned to our progress at: https://
